The United States insists on its position of wanting to set a time plan for military operations in the Gaza Strip despite Israeli statements that the war may last months and even years.

According to CNN, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, during his visit to Israel on Monday, is scheduled to pressure officials there to define the contours of the war.

A senior official said Austin would receive specific updates on how Defense Minister Yoav Galant and the IDF would assess the progress they have made in the current phase of the campaign in Gaza to dismantle Hamas’s infrastructure.

The official added that the U.S. defense secretary would press Israeli officials on the parameters they are looking for in order to move to the next stage.

The official believed that the Israeli security establishment was assessing conditions and their progress around the clock, if not daily, and that Secretary Austin would want to hear a very clear expression of their self-assessment, stressing that the United States was there to consult and make sure there was planning to move to a phase where major ground operations would cease.

As the war between Israel and Hamas enters its third month, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government is facing increasing international pressure to end its military operations in Gaza, with civilian deaths and no clear strategy to get out of this war, according to the New York Times.
