Violent clashes erupted in the western Libyan city of Zawiya on Monday, with widespread exchanges of gunfire heard near the main oil refinery.

According to local sources, one person was killed during clashes that erupted over disputes between the Abu Ras and al-Qasab militias, two of the largest militias controlling the city.

Videos circulating on social media showed citizens panicking and fleeing areas of armed confrontation.

Zawiya is one of the tensest cities in western Libya, with frequent clashes between rival militias for influence and smuggling routes.

Zawiya, 40 kilometers from the capital Tripoli, is home to an oil complex that includes Libya’s largest oil refinery and is linked to the Sharara field, which produces about 300,000 barrels per day.

The refinery’s infrastructure has previously been damaged by the clashes, affecting the country’s oil supply.

These military developments point to the possibility of an armed escalation at any time between the rival factions, as the political situation remains stagnant and efforts to reach a solution that ends the country’s divisive crisis falter.

Despite international warnings, the conflict continues as a result of an ongoing dispute over power and wealth, and stalled efforts to hold elections and form a unified legitimate government in Libya.
