The Israeli newspaper “Maariv” revealed a plan being studied by the US administration to form a “peacekeeping force” in the Gaza Strip after the end of the ongoing war, with the participation of Arab countries.
According to the report based on reports by the American newspaper The” Washington Post”, this plan was discussed in a tripartite meeting held last week in Abu Dhabi, attended by UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed, US President Joe Biden’s Senior Advisor for Middle East Affairs Brett McGurk, State Department Advisor Tom Sullivan, and on the Israeli side, Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer.
The plan aims to “correct” the Palestinian Authority in cooperation with Arab and European countries, and to form a peacekeeping force in the Strip.
The UAE estimates that the Palestinian Authority will be asked to receive military and intelligence support from various countries, with the possibility that the amended authority will be headed by Salam Fayyad, who served as Palestinian Prime Minister between 2007 and 2013.
Despite Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s opposition to the Palestinian Authority, Dermer indicated in the meeting that Israel might silently agree to the plan.
Arab countries that have shown potential support for the plan include Egypt, Morocco, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, while others including Italy, Brazil, Rwanda, Indonesia and possibly another “leading state” from Central Asia also support the plan, the report said.
The United States would help with command and control, as well as logistical support from a nearby base in Egypt.
Diplomats have discussed seeking support for a peacekeeping and stabilization force from the UN General Assembly rather than the Security Council, fearing a Russian veto, the newspaper reported.
