Egyptian Sports Minister Ashraf Sobhi announced accountability measures that will affect all sports federations after the disappointing results of the Egyptian delegation at the Paris 2024 Olympics and the loss to Morocco by a score of 6-0.
Sobhi stressed that the government has provided significant financial and technical support over the past three years, and that failure to achieve the goals will lead to accountability for those who are negligent.
For his part, Ehab El-Komy, a member of the Board of Directors of the Football Association, defended the overall performance of the Olympic team, noting that the team reached the semi-finals of the Olympics for the first time in 60 years.
El-Komy attributed the loss to Morocco to fatigue and injuries among the players, stressing the lessons learned and the importance of supporting the current generation that will represent a pillar for Egyptian football in the future.
These statements come at a time when the Egyptian delegation is preparing for a comprehensive review of all the games that participated in the Olympics, while working on preparing detailed reports to identify weaknesses and strengths and plan for the future.
Officials are set to meet to discuss the future of Brazilian Rogerio Micale, the Olympic team’s coach, after his contract with the Egyptian Football Association ends.
Egypt won its first and only bronze medal at the 2024 Olympics, after fencer Mohamed El-Sayed won the bronze medal in the men’s individual foil competition. El-Sayed defeated Hungarian player Tibor Andrászszky in a tough match that ended with a score of 8-7 after extra time.
