The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) released a recent report revealing a marked increase in the prevalence of cannabis resin in the Sahel region.
Morocco is the main source of this type of drug, as increasing quantities of cocaine have been seized in this region as well.
According to the report, the amount of cocaine seized in the Sahel region has increased significantly over the past year, reaching 1,466 kilograms, most of which were seized in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.
Cannabis resin, cocaine and pharmaceutical opioids are the most prevalent drug trafficking operations in this region, with cannabis identified as the most common drug, with most of it coming from Morocco.
This situation portends significant challenges for countries in the region, with potential impact on drug distribution networks between North Africa, the Gulf of Guinea, and the Sahel.
