The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has said 700,000 children in Sudan are likely to suffer from severe malnutrition this year, with tens of thousands likely to die.

UNICEF spokesman James Elder told a news conference in Geneva that the consequences of the last 300 days suggest that more than 700,000 children are suffering from the most serious forms of malnutrition this year.

Elder said UNICEF would not be able to treat more than 300,000 of these children without improved access and without additional support, in which case tens of thousands would likely die.
