Identical Libyan sources revealed ongoing consultations in Libyan government circles on an unannounced Egyptian-Turkish initiative to merge the Libyan National Unity Government and the government mandated by the Libyan House of Representatives.
The sources confirmed that the country’s government officials accepted the Egyptian-Turkish initiative, but consultations behind the scenes of the two governments are still underway on how the initiative can be implemented.
The sources pointed out that the talk and consultations on the proposal became clearer after the visit of a high-level Egyptian delegation to Tripoli and Benghazi on January 28 and 29, during which the features of the Egyptian-Turkish initiative on the unification of the two governments were discussed.
According to the sources’ information, Cairo, with Turkish blessing, proposes that the Presidential Council assume the primary role to supervise the implementation of the initiative to unify the two governments and give it formalization, and that unification take place in the form of a cabinet reshuffle of the Government of National Unity to base its legitimacy on the Geneva Agreement signed between the Libyan parties in February 2021.
On the other hand, government sources from Tripoli confirmed that the initiative was the main topic in the visit of Turkish Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, on Wednesday to Tripoli, who urged the need to respond to the initiative and the Turkish side’s agreement in its details with the Egyptian side.
Fidan stressed in Tripoli the realism of the proposal in relation to the current data of the political situation in Libya, and that it is the best alternative to the state of impasse left by the intractability in the positions of the House of Representatives and the High Council of State.
