The Ukrainian online newspaper “Strana” reported that several former prisoners are among the Ukrainian forces carrying out attacks on the Russian border region of Kursk.
The newspaper, citing Ukrainian military sources, confirmed that these former prisoners are taking part in attacks on civilian sites and facilities in the region.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a law allowing the mobilization of prisoners serving their sentences in prisons, which led to the release of about 4,000 prisoners eager to serve in the Ukrainian armed forces, according to the Ukrainian Deputy Justice Minister, Yelena Vysotskaya, on May 30.
According to the “Washington Post”, more than 2,750 prisoners have been released from Ukrainian prisons since the new law was passed in May, including those convicted of various crimes, including drug trafficking, assault and murder.
The Ukrainian newspaper “Telegraph” reported in late June that six prisoners who had agreed to serve in the Ukrainian forces had escaped from the Desna training center in the Chernihiv region with their personal weapons.
On the other hand, the Russian-Ukrainian border recently witnessed an attack by Ukrainian forces on the Kursk region.
The Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Valery Gerasimov, confirmed that the Russian forces successfully repelled the attacks, inflicting heavy losses on the Ukrainian forces.
