US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced on Monday the appointment of a special envoy for Sudan, as part of efforts to end the grinding war that erupted in mid-April between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Blinken confirmed that Tom Perriello, who previously served as U.S. special envoy for the Great Lakes region of Africa, will be responsible for coordinating U.S. policy toward Sudan.

Blinken added that Perriello will work to strengthen U.S. efforts to end the fighting and ensure unhindered humanitarian access, as well as support the Sudanese people in their quest to achieve their aspirations for freedom, peace, and justice.

In a separate statement, Perriello expressed his willingness to build on the efforts of partners in Africa and the Middle East, with the aim of ending the war and humanitarian crisis and combating atrocities.

Perriello noted that his appointment reflects the great importance that the US administration attaches to ending the war, stopping violations against civilians, and avoiding the horrific humanitarian situation turning into a humanitarian tragedy.

The appointment comes in a time frame of growing concern by the United States over the Sudanese military’s blocking of cross-border humanitarian aid from Chad and reports of complicated aid reaching RSF-controlled areas in Sudan.
