Two Algerian photographs by photographer Yahia Talebi, from Beni Abbes Province, ranked among the top ten in the world.

The announcement of the awarding of the two photos came during the World Summit on the Information Society Photo Contest (WSIS Photo Contest 2024).

The competition involves submitting photographs from all countries of the world that illustrate how media and communication technologies play an enabling role in achieving sustainable development goals.

A statement by the Algerian Ministry of Post and Telecommunications stated that the two pictures contain “extreme symbolism,” as the first, taken in the city of Timodi in southern Algeria, expresses the keeping up of different generations with modern means of communication, as it embodies an old woman who has adapted to it, as she makes a call to her granddaughter who has not yet lived. She had been seeing her for several months, and this made her cry tears of joy mixed with longing and nostalgia.

The statement explained that the second photo “documents the intimate relationship between the young man Hamama and the camel via video call while communicating with his friends, as media and communication technologies have shortened the distances between them.”
