Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler announced that his country continues to train the armed forces in western Libya since the start of its presence in the country in early 2020.

The minister said that since the signing of the memorandum of understanding in the field of military cooperation between Turkey and the Government of National Accord, Turkish army trainers have trained more than 15,000 members of the armed forces in different regions of western Libya.

“We continue to provide advice and military assistance to Libya, with which we have historical ties of friendship and brotherhood,” the minister added.

Turkey sent thousands of its troops and mercenaries from the armed factions loyal to it in Syria to western Libya in early 2020, under a memorandum of understanding for military and security cooperation signed by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan with the head of the former Government of National Accord, Fayez al-Sarraj, in Istanbul on November 27, 2019.

According to local Libyan sources, some types of weapons provided to western Libyan forces are moving beyond the embargo to armed groups in Tripoli, and Libyans themselves, including one of the country’s largest tribes, Warfaleh, are categorically opposed to the presence of Turkish forces on their territory.
