Turkey’s parliament has approved Sweden’s accession to NATO after a delay of more than a year due to what Turkey saw as Sweden’s failure to fight “terrorism.”
Stockholm’s bid to join the alliance was approved by 287 lawmakers to 55 against, after winning the approval of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Erdogan is expected to sign the document ratifying Sweden’s application for joining the bloc in the coming days. For his part, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Christersson welcomed the Turkish parliament’s approval of his country’s membership in NATO. Christersson wrote on Platform X: “Today we are one step away from becoming a full member of NATO.”
