The National Oil Office in Tunisia announced, on Thursday, that the country’s revenues from olive oil exports jumped by 80% to reach about $1.41 billion, during the period from November 2023 to June 2024.
According to the statement, Tunisia exported 165,000 tons of olive oil during this period, compared to 150,000 tons in the same period last year.
The Tunisian Ministry of Agriculture expects olive oil exports in 2024 to exceed 300,000 tons in light of an increase in both production and global demand.
Tunisia ranks third among the largest olive oil exporting countries in the world after Spain and Italy, with the largest proportion of its exports directed to the European Union, the United States, and Canada.
It is expected that the increase in olive oil exports will contribute to increasing the state’s hard currency revenues, as well as improving the trade deficit.
In 2023, Tunisia recorded a record revenue from olive oil exports, amounting to 3.8 billion dinars, compared to 2.5 billion dinars in 2022.
Olive oil exports contributed to supporting the food export index, which rose to a rate of 52.1% in 2023, compared to 41.5% in 2022, according to data issued by the National Oil Office.
Olive oil exports constitute about 40% of total agricultural product exports, making them an important tributary to the Tunisian economy.
