The head of the Independent High Authority for Elections in Tunisia, Farouk Bouasker, confirmed that the authority is responsible for monitoring media content during the election period, given the absence of a media regulatory body.

Bouasker explained that the authority, as an independent constitutional body, is responsible for ensuring the integrity and fairness of the electoral process, and the constitution and law authorize it to supervise all aspects of electoral affairs.

Bouasker stressed that the authority will not abandon its role in media oversight, noting that it will take measures against any media content that includes a discourse that calls for violence or hatred, or spreads fake news, or violates neutrality and balance.

He said that the authority will issue warnings to the offending media outlets to correct the situation, and if the necessary measures are not taken, the authority will take strict measures.

Bouasker stated that the authority has a media monitoring cell consisting of experts in journalism and law, which prepares reports and recommendations for the authority’s council.

He explained that most of the reports received by the authority do not require legal procedures, except in rare cases in which they are referred to the Public Prosecution.

Bouasker added that the authority may resort to urgent courts to obtain rulings to stop biased or non-objective media content that harms the interests of candidates.
