The Tunisian Interior Ministry announced on Thursday the arrest of three terrorist elements, including a prominent commander, in an operation carried out in the Kasserine Mountains in the center of the country.

The operation resulted in the arrest of Mahmoud al-Salami, nicknamed “Emir of the Ajnad al-Khilafat Battalion”, following a tightly prepared ambush, the Interior Ministry statement said.

The Tunisian Interior Ministry added that its forces were able to confiscate weapons, explosives, and explosive belts in his possession, noting that Salami participated in several operations targeting security forces and the army, in addition to looting and intimidation operations in the region.

In a related development, the ministry talked about another operation carried out last Wednesday, after intelligence information about the location of two elements in the “Ain Al-Gharm” area of Jabal “Al-Seif”, where one of them, Seif al-Din Zabiba, was arrested, while efforts continue to arrest his companion.

The ministry also confirmed the arrest of a third fugitive “terrorist” element in the Kasserine Mountains on Friday and was referred to the National Unit for the Research on Terrorism Crimes.

It is noteworthy that the ISIS-affiliated Jund al-Khilafa group, after splitting from the Aqaba organization of al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, has suffered heavy losses in recent years as a result of the operations of the Tunisian security and military services.
