Tunisia ranked third in Africa in the food waste index, according to the Food Waste Report issued by the United Nations Environment Programme.

Tunisia ranked third in Africa with 172 kilograms per capita, behind Tanzania with 245 kilograms per capita in first place, and Egypt with 207 kilograms per capita in second place.

According to the report, Tunisia is ahead of the countries with the largest area in Africa in terms of food that goes to waste, including Libya, where the level of waste does not exceed 84 kilograms per capita, and South Africa, which does not exceed a maximum of 134 kilograms, and can only reach 8 kilograms in some of its states. Nigeria, Kenya and Senegal also moved up the rankings.

The UN report issued in March said that “the purpose of publishing statistics on global food waste is to measure food waste, which enables countries to understand the magnitude of the problem, and thus give the opportunity to remedy this phenomenon.”

The report provides the most accurate global estimate of food waste in retail and consumption, along with guidance for countries on improving data collection, and suggests best practices in moving from measuring food waste to reducing it.
