The Misdemeanor Court in the Judicial Complex specializing in economic and financial crimes in Tunisia ruled to imprison the leader of the Ennahda movement, Rached Ghannouchi, and the movement’s leader, Rafik Abdel Salam, for three years on charges of foreign financing of the movement.

The Tunisian Court of First Instance spokesman said that the court also ruled to fine the defendants an amount equivalent to the value of the foreign funding the movement received.

It is noteworthy that Ghannouchi is facing several cases, some of which have resulted in prison sentences and others that are still under investigation.

Several months ago, Ghannouchi announced his boycott of investigation sessions and trials at all stages, considering that these prosecutions are of a political and malicious nature, and do not meet the conditions for a fair trial.

According to Ghannouchi’s defense committee, he is being tried in about nine cases. The police arrested him after raiding his house on April 17, 2023, on suspicion of conspiring against state security. He was imprisoned by order of the Court of First Instance in Tunis due to statements attributed to him inciting against state security.

Ghannouchi is considered one of the most prominent leaders of the Salvation Front, which opposes the exceptional measures taken by President Kais Saied since July 25, 2021, which included dissolving the Judicial Council and Parliament, issuing legislation by presidential orders, approving a new constitution through a referendum, and holding early legislative elections that were boycotted by the opposition.
