Former Tunisian security official Hicham Meddeb has announced his intention to run in the country’s upcoming presidential elections.

Meddeb said he has extensive knowledge and experience in administrative and security affairs, which qualifies him to assume governance responsibilities effectively.

In remarks to the local private radio station Jawhara FM, Meddeb pointed out that he is not linked to any political party, identifying himself as a “man of the homeland” and not a “politician.”

The former security official announced his intention to make radical changes to the country’s political structure if he wins, as he plans to dissolve parliament within the first 100 days of taking office, make amendments to the 2014 constitution, and form a new constitutional court.

Meddeb promised that he would work to release those detained for political reasons and repeal Decree No. 54, on combating crimes related to information systems, which rights organizations consider “undermines freedom of expression.”

Tunisia’s presidential elections are expected to be held in November, the twelfth presidential election, and the third after the revolution, in which the eighth president in the country’s history will be elected for a five-year term.
