Tunisian customs at the Ras Ajdir border crossing have granted exceptional permits to Libyan trucks parked on the Tunisian side of the closed Ras Ajdir crossing with Libya, to allow them to modify the route specified for crossing through the Dhiba Wazen crossing.

This decision comes after the continued closure of the Ras Ajdir border crossing by a Libyan decision as a result of security disturbances at the crossing.

The Ministry of Interior of the outgoing Libyan government announced last Thursday the return of its employees from the Ras Ajdir border crossing with Tunisia, explaining that the crossing is no longer under control following an attack by gunmen on it.

The interim interior minister of the Government of National Unity, Imad Trabelsi, also informed all political and official bodies of the closure of the crossing until further notice, as a result of “illegal” armed gatherings present there.

The head of the Tunisian Observatory for Human Rights, Mustapha Abdel Kabir, confirmed on Monday that calm currently prevails on the Tunisian-Libyan border, and stated that meetings have been held between the Libyan parties in Tripoli, Zawiya, Misrata and Zuwara, with the aim of finding peaceful solutions to avoid clash and end the crossing crisis.

Abdul Kabir pointed out that a peaceful solution requires the implementation of legal mechanisms by all government agencies operating at the crossing, stressing that this requires a joint field effort and time to reopen the crossing in the coming days.

The Ras Ajdir border crossing is the most important land crossing in western Libya linking it to Tunisia and turns into a wide smuggling area between the two countries at night.
