The head of the Tunisian Independent High Authority for Elections, Farouk Bouaskar, announced that nominations would be open from the twenty-ninth of this July until the sixth of August.
Bouaskar stressed the need for candidates’ files to be free of legal records as a main condition for running in the elections scheduled for October 6th.
President Kais Saied has not yet decided his position on running for a second term, despite signs that suggest his intention to continue his political career, according to his previous statements in which he pledged to adhere to the covenant.
This anticipation comes at a time when the opposition continues to criticize the measures taken by Saied since July 25, 2021, which were met with the opposition’s boycott of the recent electoral elections.
The preparation stage for the elections is also accompanied by a special political reality with judicial rulings for a number of opposition political figures, including the leader of the Ennahdha Movement, Rached Ghannouchi, and the head of the Free Destourian Party, Abeer Moussa.
The Tunisian authorities stress ensuring freedoms and not targeting political opponents, while Tunisian and international human rights organizations criticize President Saied’s approach, considering that he intends to tighten the noose on the opposition.
