The government of Trinidad and Tobago announced on Thursday that it has joined the list of countries that officially recognize the state of Palestine.

“The Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago took a decision, at its Cabinet meeting on Thursday, to formally recognize the State of Palestine,” the government said in a statement after the Cabinet meeting in which the decision was taken.

“On the recommendation of the Minister for Foreign Affairs and CARICOM Affairs, the Cabinet decided that the formal recognition of Palestine by the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago would help achieve lasting peace, by strengthening the growing international consensus on the issue of Palestinian statehood,” the statement added.

“Recognition of Palestine is moral and just and shows Trinidad and Tobago’s recognition of and support for the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people,” the statement said.

The government of Trinidad and Tobago said it would continue to support the two-state solution as “the only way out of the ongoing cycle of violence”.

The Government noted that since the last war on the Gaza Strip on 7 October, Trinidad and Tobago has also supported the resolutions adopted at the emergency sessions of the General Assembly held on 27 October and 10 December 2023, on the protection of civilians and legal and humanitarian obligations.

Prior to Trinidad and Tobago’s declaration, 141 of the 193 UN member states officially recognized the state of Palestine, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates.
