Burkina Faso’s interim president, Brahim Traoré, said Russian troops could be deployed to fight jihadists in his country if needed.

Traoré added that Russia could provide logistical assistance and conduct tactical training and was ready to sell any weapons Burkina Faso needed.

Traore said there were no restrictions on what could be bought in Russia, China, Turkey, or Iran, unlike other countries.

Traoré’s comments come against the backdrop of last week’s events in which about 100 Russian soldiers were sent to the African country as military trainers.

The country’s relationship with Russia began to strengthen when France was forced to withdraw its troops in early 2023.

Burkina Faso is battling Islamist groups linked to al-Qaeda and Islamic State, which have seized large areas of the country and forced millions of people to flee their homes.
