Algiers witnessed the signing of 3 new agreements and contracts for mining projects in Gara Jbailat (Tindouf), Tala Hamza Bouad Amizour (Bejaia) and Bechar.
A contract was signed between the National Iron and Steel Corporation “Feral” (Sonaram Complex Branch) and the Chinese company “Sinostel” for the construction of the first pre-processing unit for iron ore at the Gara Jubailat mine with a capacity of 4 million tons.
The project aims to reduce dependence on iron ore imports and achieve Algeria’s self-sufficiency in this vital material.
A second agreement was signed between the Turkish “Tosyali” Foundation and “Feral” to establish a mixed company to complete a unit for the production of iron ore concentrates in the Tomyat area of Bashar, with an annual production capacity of 1 million tons.
The Algerian-Australian mixed company also signed a third agreement between West Mediterranean Zinc (WMA) and China’s Sinosteel for the construction of an underground mine at the level of the lead-zinc reservoir in Oued Amizour, with an annual capacity of 170,000 tons of zinc and 30,000 tons of lead.
The general manager of the Sonarim Industrial Mining Complex, Mohamed Sakhr Harami, stressed the importance of the mining projects under construction, which include the barite mine in Beni Abbas and the manganese mine in Bechar, and the integrated phosphate mine in the east of the country.
These projects contribute to the complex’s goal of reaching an expected turnover of $5 billion by 2030.
Since 2023, Algeria has focused on the exploitation of the iron ore of the strategic Gara Jbailat mine in Tindouf, one of the largest iron mines in the world.
Algeria’s mining sector has great potential involving more than 1,000 underground mineral resources, including iron, phosphate, zinc, gold, and manganese.
