The United Nations says the war in Sudan has displaced 7.1 million people, calling it “the world’s largest displacement crisis.”
The spokesman for the U.N. Secretary-General Stephane Dujarric said the recent fighting in the center of the country had forced 300,000 people to flee.
Dujarric said: “These new operations bring the number of displaced people to 7.1 million, including 1.5 million who have sought refuge in neighboring countries.”
According to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), more than 150,000 children were displaced within days from Sudan’s Gezira state, cutting off urgent humanitarian aid due to escalating violence there.
On Thursday, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) warned that what Sudan is witnessing is “a humanitarian tragedy of enormous proportions, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis.”
