A State Department spokesman announced on Tuesday that Secretary of State Antony Blinken will visit Saudi Arabia and Egypt this week to discuss a ceasefire agreement in Gaza.
According to the spokesman, Blinken will discuss an “immediate ceasefire agreement” in Gaza, which would ensure the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas and increase humanitarian access to the territory.
The US spokesman said the agreement included “intensifying international efforts to increase humanitarian aid to Gaza” and post-war planning.
Any agreement will ensure that Hamas does not return to power or repeat the October 7 attacks, as well as find a political solution for the Palestinian people with security guarantees for Israel and build lasting peace and security in the region.
Blinken’s visit to Saudi Arabia and Egypt coincides with talks between Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, Israeli Mossad chief David Parnia and Egyptian officials in Qatar over a ceasefire in Gaza.
Blinken told a news conference that his visits to Egypt and Saudi Arabia were aimed at “discussing the sound foundation for a lasting regional peace,” adding that “100 percent of Gaza’s population needs humanitarian aid.”
