U.S. Special Envoy to Sudan Tom Perriello said on Tuesday he hoped the parties to Sudan’s conflict would resume dialogue after Ramadan and work to prevent a wider regional war, despite the failure of previous negotiations.
The recently appointed envoy to Sudan, a former member of Congress who recently completed a tour of seven countries, indicated that talks involving Saudi Arabia’s leadership may commence around April 18.
Upon his return to Washington, he told journalists, “Anyone who believes the path is paved for either side to achieve a clear victory must fully realize at this stage that the situation is not as such.”
The French Press Agency quoted Briello as saying, “The war of attrition… not only represents a disaster for civilians, but it can easily fuel further divisions and escalate into a regional war.”
The war erupted in April 2023 between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, resulting in the deaths of tens of thousands and forcing millions to flee, pushing the impoverished state to the brink of famine.
Previous rounds of talks held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, only resulted in general commitments to cease the conflict in Sudan.
Despite his optimism about the resumption of official negotiations, Briello emphasized the importance of not “glorifying the start of talks,” stating that the United States and other countries are exploring incentives that could lead to ending the war.
