The chairman of the US House of Representatives Intelligence Committee, Representative Mike Turner, announced in a statement on Wednesday that all members of Congress have access to information related to a “serious threat to national security,” without specifying the source.
Turner, a Republican who represents Ohio, stressed the need for President Joe Biden to declassify the information and demanded a public discussion of measures taken to address the threat.
Multiple sources described the intelligence as “highly sensitive,” according to CNN.
A letter from Turner sent to members of Congress spoke of a “destabilizing foreign military capability,” suggesting it was related to a potential threat from a Russian military force.
In response to Turner’s comments, White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said he could not disclose details about the nature of the threat.
He recalled that he had briefed members of both major chambers earlier this week.
Sullivan affirmed his confidence that the Biden administration is working to protect the national security of the United States and its people, stressing the need to deal effectively with the various challenges and threats facing the country.
