The United States vetoed a draft resolution submitted by Algeria demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza on humanitarian grounds.
The draft resolution received the support of 13 of the 15 members of the Council, with the United States opposing and the United Kingdom abstaining.
The draft resolution rejected the forced displacement of Palestinians, appealed to all parties to comply with their obligations under international law, and demanded the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.
Algerian Ambassador to the United Nations Ammar Ben Jammeh said after the vote: “The failure of the Security Council once again to live up to the calls and aspirations of the peoples, this failure does not absolve it of carrying out its responsibilities, nor does it absolve the international community of its duties towards the defenseless Palestinian people.”
Bin Jama pointed out that “those who obstruct this must review their policies and calculations because the wrong decisions today reap our region and the world their results tomorrow, violence and instability,” and continued: “Ask yourself and your conscience about the outcome of your decisions and how history will judge you.”
Russian Ambassador to the UN Vassily Nebenzia said: “The United States seeks to cover up its closest ally in the Middle East and buy time so that it can complete its inhumane plans in Gaza to remove the Palestinians from the Strip and completely cleanse it.”
“Full responsibility for the consequences lies with Washington, no matter how much the United States tries to evade them by talking about its important mediation efforts,” Nebenzia said.
