The Pentagon has decided to withdraw the entire US troop group, including 1,000 people, from Niger in the next few months, Politico quoted its sources as saying.
In April, the United States announced it would begin discussing troop withdrawal plans after Nigerien authorities said it would scrap a military cooperation agreement with Washington.
The U.S. State Department earlier announced Washington’s plans to begin a dialogue with Nigerien authorities on withdrawing troops from the country.
This was reportedly the result of ongoing discussions between the United States and Niger’s new authorities since 2023 on continued security cooperation. Shortly thereafter, the Pentagon announced that part of the U.S. contingent would be withdrawn from Niger.
On April 12, as reported by Novosti, Russian experts arrived in Niger to train local forces in counterterrorism.
The British newspaper “Financial Times” considered that the decision of the United States to withdraw its troops from Niger is a new strategic victory for Russia.
