The US Special Envoy to Libya, Richard Norland, praised the convening of a meeting of the African Union High Committee on Libya to support the political process, with the participation of President of the Presidential Council Mohamed Menfi and other regional leaders.
The U.S. Embassy in Libya described the meeting as reinforcing the efforts of the UN envoy to Libya, Abdullah Batele, to launch political negotiations with key stakeholders.
The embassy expressed its aspiration to hold the national reconciliation conference scheduled for April 28 in Sirte, stressing that national and local reconciliation is a major focus of US assistance.
The final communiqué of the committee’s meeting in Congo called on all external parties to stop and refrain from interfering in Libya’s internal affairs.
The final statement after the committee meeting said that external interference in the Libyan crisis undermines the fundamental interests and legitimate aspirations of the Libyan people.
The meeting called on the African Union Commission to continue supporting Libyans to ensure the success of reconciliation, calling on everyone to fully adopt reconciliation efforts in an inclusive and constructive manner.
