US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin confirmed that the strikes launched by US and British forces against targets belonging to the Houthi militia in Yemen are aimed at disrupting and weakening the capabilities of the Houthis to endanger sailors and threaten global trade in one of the world’s most important waterways.

“In light of the unlawful, dangerous and destabilizing Iranian-backed Houthi attacks against U.S., international and commercial vessels from many countries legally transiting the Red Sea, today the U.S. and UK militaries, with the support of Australia, Bahrain, Canada and the Netherlands, have launched strikes against military targets in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen,” he said in a statement.

“This measure is aimed at disrupting and weakening the Houthis’ capabilities to endanger seafarers.”

“Today’s coalition action sends a clear message that they (the Houthis) will bear more costs if they do not end their unlawful attacks,” Austin said.

The United States and Britain launched air strikes against Houthi Ansar Allah targets in Yemen early Friday. A U.S. official said the strikes targeted radar sites, drone platforms, missiles, and coastal observation sites, noting that the operation was over, “but we reserve the right to respond if threats continue.”

The official confirmed that the strikes against Houthi positions in Yemen hit their targets, and a US defense official indicated that the strikes against Houthi positions in Yemen involved ships, warplanes, and submarines.
