The United Nations expressed deep concern on Sunday over the deteriorating situation in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State in Sudan, amid escalating clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces.
The United Nations spokesman Farhan Haq confirmed that Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is monitoring developments with great concern, warning of the devastating consequences of these battles on civilians.
Haq pointed out that these clashes could exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in El Fasher, especially in light of previous reports of famine in Zamzam camp south of the city, with the possibility of spreading to other displacement sites.
In its statement, the United Nations called on all warring parties to abide by international humanitarian law, ensure the protection of civilians, and facilitate safe and rapid access to humanitarian aid.
Guterres renewed his call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and the resumption of political dialogue as a means to achieve peace.
The United Nations expressed its commitment to supporting international efforts to end the conflict and work with all concerned parties to achieve a negotiated solution that ends the suffering in Darfur.
