The United Nations Support Mission in Libya condemned the violent clashes that erupted in the Tadjourah area on Saturday, which resulted in a military escalation in the capital, Tripoli, and its surrounding areas.
The mission expressed its deep concern over reports of civilian casualties and injuries, as well as the displacement of many families.
The mission strongly condemned the use of heavy weapons in residential areas, reminding all parties of their obligations to protect civilians.
The mission welcomed the efforts made to de-escalate and agreed to a cessation of hostilities, calling on all parties to fully abide by it.
The mission confirmed its continued communication with the Libyan authorities to secure an end to the clashes and restore stability to the affected areas, warning of the consequences of not holding those responsible for the violence accountable.
The mission indicated that these clashes highlight the urgent need to unify the military and security services and establish legitimate and accountable institutions.
The mission called for accelerating the launch of an inclusive political process leading to credible elections, which would contribute to achieving stability and prosperity for the Libyan people.
