West Africa is suffering from deteriorating security as a result of the increased activity of the Islamic State terrorist group and its groups in West Africa and the Sahel, the United Nations said.

UN Under-Secretary for Counter-Terrorism Vladimir Voronkov stressed at a meeting of the UN Security Council that “Daesh continues to pose a serious threat to international peace and security, particularly in West Africa and the Sahel, the two regions most affected by the activities of ISIL and its affiliates.”

“The situation in these two regions has deteriorated over the past six months and has become more complex, with local and regional ethnic conflicts,” Voronkov said.

“ISIS-affiliated groups continue to operate more independently of ISIS’s central structure, raising fears of the emergence of a wide area of instability from Mali to Nigeria’s border,” Voronkov said.
