A spokesperson for the United Nations stated that the fighting that broke out in Sudan since last April between the army and quasi-military forces has so far led to the displacement of 7.1 million people, describing it as the largest displacement crisis in the world.

The war between the head of the army, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and its second commander, Lieutenant General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, spread last week to the central eastern province of Gezira, approaching the city of Wad Madani, which served as a humanitarian hub and shelter for the former displaced.

According to the International Organization for Migration, up to 300,000 people fled a civilian situation as fighting approached. Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN secretary-general, said that “these new moves bring the number of displaced people to 7.1 million,” including 1.5 million who sought refuge in neighboring countries.

According to UNICEF, at least 150,000 children were forced to flee their homes in Gezira state in less than a week.

UNICEF President Catherine Russell said in a press release: “Our colleagues in Sudan have heard horrific stories from women and children who have gone through the horrific journey to reach Madani, and now, even this fragile sense of security has been shattered as these same children are forced to flee again.
