The Acting Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, Stephanie Khoury, called on Libyan leaders to engage in dialogue to form a unified government that will lead the country to elections.

This came in a meeting on Wednesday with Parliament Speaker Aguila Saleh, where the latter confirmed his support for a new political process run by the United Nations.

The political conflict continues between the main parties in Libya over the issue of forming a unified government, as the head of the National Unity Government, Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, refuses to leave power and make room for another government, while Parliament insists on the need to search for an alternative to him.

The debate over electoral laws has continued since the elections project was disrupted in December 2021, due to disagreements over the conditions for running in the presidential elections, which led to political stagnation in the country.

International attempts and movements have been renewed recently to push the Libyans out of the stalemate, by engaging in a meaningful political dialogue without preconditions, as the only path towards elections.

Khoury pledged earlier to support Libyans in sparing the country the dangers of division, violence, and wasting resources, by facilitating a comprehensive political process.

It affirmed the mission’s commitment to supporting the holding of comprehensive, free and fair national elections to restore legitimacy to Libyan institutions, supporting a comprehensive national reconciliation process with all partners, and working with the Libyans to fully and sustainably implement the ceasefire agreement.
