The United Nations has called on the Libyan authorities to conduct a prompt and in-depth investigation into the killing of 10 people in an armed attack in the municipality of Abu Salim in the Libyan capital Tripoli.
The violent incident underscores the concerns repeatedly expressed by the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Libya, Abdallah Batelli, about the serious dangers posed by rivalry between security groups, which continue to threaten Tripoli’s fragile security.
The UN urged the relevant Libyan authorities to ensure an independent, prompt, and in-depth investigation into the incident with a view to avoiding any further escalation and violence in the capital.
Tripoli security director Khalil Wahiba spoke in a press briefing about the latest investigations on the crime that occurred in a house in the Abu Salim area and explained that among the dead were members of the Stabilization Support Service, stressing that an unknown armed group attacked them, and that the Ministry of Interior is working to detect and arrest the perpetrators to ensure that there is no impunity.
Wahiba added that the Public Prosecution was informed of the incident, which in turn began the investigation accompanied by the Criminal Investigation Office, and work was done to remove fingerprints, search the house, conduct an apparent examination of the bodies, and present them to forensic medicine.
For its part, the Stabilization Support Agency confirmed on Facebook that two of its members were among the victims of the incident, which coincided with the thirteenth anniversary of the revolution that overthrew the rule of the late Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi.
