The UN envoy to Libya, Abdullah Batili, stressed that Libyan leaders are responsible for finding a way out of the crisis in their country or exposing it to further stumbling and postponing the holding of elections.

Some leaders continue to procrastinate and have not shown a firm commitment to ending the political stalemate in the country,” Batteli said.

During his speech to the UN Security Council on Monday, Batteli noted that not all leaders directly declined the invitation to the five-way meeting, but some imposed conditions for participation.

He explained that the speaker of parliament, Aguila Saleh, stressed the need to focus on the agenda on the formation of a new government, while the head of the national unity government, Abdul Hamid Dabaiba, rejected any discussions on changing the government.

Regarding the election laws approved by parliament, Batelli stressed that they will only make elections possible if the parties commit to implementing them honestly and genuinely and work to achieve political consensus.

The UN envoy concluded by stressing that there is a sense of fatigue and resentment due to the procrastination pursued by some political parties in Libya, warning of the danger of exposing the region to more chaos and calling for not allowing personal desires to disappoint the hopes of the Libyan people.
