The Humanitarian Coordinator of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, Georgette Gagnon, held a meeting on Tuesday with the President of the Steering Council of Benghazi Municipality, Al-Saqr Imran Boujuwari, to discuss reconstruction projects and Sudanese refugees.
According to a statement published by the Benghazi municipality’s Facebook page, the meeting dealt with several topics, including ongoing reconstruction projects within the municipality and the challenges it faces.
The reports issued by the international mission on cities affected by floods and floods, and internal displacement from other cities to Benghazi during the past years were reviewed.
The meeting touched on the situation of Sudanese refugees currently residing in Benghazi and the measures taken by local authorities.
The progress of the restoration projects of the Manar Palace and the historic municipal building, funded by the United Nations Development Fund with the support of the European Union, was discussed.
Al-Saqr Imran Boujuwari stressed the importance of the projects implemented through the Libya Development and Reconstruction Fund, noting that the Fund’s work achieves positive results in various service fields.
He also praised the programs and projects implemented by the UN mission and its affiliated organizations with regard to humanitarian and service affairs.
The number of Sudanese refugees in Benghazi is estimated at 250,000, most of whom face significant challenges related to the provision of basic needs such as housing, food, and health care.
