The Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Alexander Sirsky, announced at dawn on Saturday the withdrawal of Ukrainian units from the city of Avdiivka, north of Donetsk, and the transition to defense on more advantageous lines.

Sirski wrote on his Facebook account: “Based on the operational situation in Avdiivka, I have decided to withdraw our units from the city and move towards a defensive position.”

The commander of the Ukrainian strategic group “Tavria” Alexander Tarnavsky stressed that this was “the only right decision,” and that Ukrainian forces had already left the city.

The newspaper “Ukrainska Pravda” quoted Tarnavsky as saying: “New sites have been prepared and strong fortifications are being prepared, taking into account all possible scenarios.”

Earlier, the Washington Post reported that the Ukrainian army had partially withdrawn from Avdiivka, and that the surrender of Ukrainian troops in the city was only a matter of time.

White House spokesman John Kirby said the situation in Avdiivka had become critical due to a lack of ammunition.

In the same context, the representative of the Ukrainian strategic group “Tavria” Dmitry Likhovoy assured last Wednesday that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are preparing for the fact that they may soon lose control of the main supply line of forces in this axis, and the head of Ukrainian military intelligence, Kirill Bodanov, acknowledged the progress of the Russian army, including near Avdiivka.
