The US State Department has expressed “deep regret” its dismay at the decision of Mali’s transitional authorities to withdraw from the Algiers Peace and Reconciliation Agreement.

The ministry stressed that the implementation of this agreement could have contributed to greater stability for the Malian people.

The regional spokesman for the US State Department, Samuel Warberg, indicated that he expects the transitional authorities in Mali to respect their commitment to organize elections and return to a democratic civilian government, and that the United States is waiting for the announcement of the date of these elections.

The spokesman did not hide Washington’s concern about the impact of the withdrawal of the transitional authorities from the Algiers agreement on the security situation, warning that this could lead to the return of tension and conflict between the conflicting parties in the region.
