The U.S. Embassy in Sudan reported Friday that John Godfrey ended his tenure as the first U.S. ambassador to Khartoum in a quarter of a century, while Ambassador Daniel Rubinstein took charge as chargé d’affaires.

In an open meeting on Thursday, Godfrey thanked the staff of the Sudan mission, saying, “I am extremely proud of the firm determination of the Sudan Mission staff to support the safe evacuation of Americans and citizens of allied nations when fighting broke out, and to work from multiple locations since that time, to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian assistance, and to reach out to warring parties to protect civilians, secure truces, document atrocities, and support the Sudanese people.”

“When this conflict ends, it is the Sudanese people who will make the difference in the difficult task of rebuilding the country in a way that fulfills their aspirations for freedom, peace and justice,” Godfrey said.

On the first of September 2022, American Godfrey presented his credentials to the President of the Sovereignty Council, Sudanese Army Commander Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, ending a quarter-century rupture since the departure of the last US ambassador in Khartoum.
