Tunisian President Kais Saied issued a presidential order calling on voters to participate in the presidential elections scheduled for Sunday, October 6th.
About nine political figures announced their intention to run in the presidential race, while Saied did not officially announce his intention to run for a second term, although his statements suggest this, especially what he announced in the city of Monastir about the necessity of completing the July 25 path that he began in 2021, and that he will not give up. The country is only for the truthful.
For months, Tunisia has been witnessing an intense political debate about setting the date for the presidential elections, as the opposition, political and civil activists are demanding that a final date be set for the elections and adherence to fair and transparent competition rules that guarantee the participation of opponents without exclusion, intimidation or threats to competitors.
The controversy continued in the Tunisian political arena despite Kais Saied’s confirmation last April that all previously announced electoral dates would be respected, due to the lack of a final date for the upcoming presidential elections.
Yesterday evening, Tuesday evening, the Independent High Authority for Elections announced that the authority’s council will hold a meeting next Thursday to approve the calendar of the presidential elections for the year 2024 and revise Regulatory Resolution No. 18 of 2014 related to the rules and procedures for candidacy in the presidential elections.
