The People’s Movement, one of the forces supporting Tunisian President Kais Saied, announced its intention to present one of its leaders to compete in the presidential elections scheduled for next October 6.
The announcement came after the conclusion of the work of the National Movement Council, which adopts Nasserism as a political approach, and supports the measures taken by Saeed since July 25, 2021.
The movement’s statement stated that the National Council decided, at its last meeting, to nominate one of the movement’s leaders for the upcoming presidential elections, and the statement indicated that the name of the candidate would be revealed at a later time.
The movement stressed the importance of holding elections in a transparent and fair environment, stressing the necessity of “providing equal opportunities for all candidates.”
This step comes at a time when the current president, Kais Saied, is preparing to run in the elections in search of a second term, after winning the 2019 elections. For its part, the National Salvation Front, the largest opposition bloc in the country, announced that it will not participate in the elections due to “the absence of conditions.” Fair competition.
It is noteworthy that the People’s Movement has a presence in the Tunisian parliament with 11 deputies out of 153, and was founded in 2011, after the Tunisian revolution, by a group of opponents of the regime of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, and is considered an extension of the “Nasserist Unionists in Tunisia” movement that was active during the era of Ben Ali. As an opposition movement.
