Opposition forces in Tunisia accused the electoral supervisory body of trying to exclude some potential presidential candidates.
According to official data, 80 recommendation forms have been withdrawn so far for the presidential elections, and this number is expected to change until the nomination period closes on August 6.
The opposition strongly criticized the Electoral College, claiming that it directly targets potential rivals to the current president, Kais Saied, threatening the transparency of the electoral process scheduled for September.
As the candidates race to collect the necessary recommendations, from representatives or citizens, doubts arise about the integrity of the upcoming elections in light of the absence of clear political identities and conflicting projects that were characteristic of previous races.
The Tunisian Constitution stipulates that the conditions for a presidential candidate include that the candidate must be of Tunisian nationality from birth, must not hold another nationality, must be at least 35 years of age, the candidate must be a Muslim, and not have a judicial ruling issued against him related to financial or moral crimes.
The constitution also stipulates that the candidate must collect recommendations from a certain number of voters (about 10,000 signatures of registered voters), or recommendations from a number of representatives (a specific number of members of the Assembly of People’s Representatives), and the candidate must have resided in Tunisia for a certain period before applying.
