Tunisian authorities announced on Saturday that they had succeeded in arresting six individuals accused of involvement in terrorist activities.

The operation was carried out with the participation of information and security units from several areas, including Ghar al-Dama, Tabarka, Mateur, Sbeitla and Garmbalia, and in cooperation with the counter-terrorism services in the provinces of Jendouba, Bizerte, Kasserine and Nabeul.

The six officers face charges of belonging to terrorist organizations and have previously been sentenced to between two and eight years in prison.

The Tunisian authorities confirmed that all necessary legal measures have been taken against those arrested.

Tunisia has a comprehensive legislative framework to combat terrorism; Basic Law No. 26 of 2015, which was revised by Basic Law No. 9 of 2019, aims to address terrorism and money laundering and supports international efforts in this area.

Tunisia’s National Counter-Terrorism Committee is also mandated to monitor and evaluate the implementation of the resolutions of the competent UN structures related to combating terrorism and preventing the financing of the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

The Committee works to identify and address the factors contributing to the spread of extremism and to address the recruitment of persons for the purpose of committing terrorist acts.

Tunisia also has the National Counter-Terrorism Regiment, a special counterterrorism unit that has been effective in pursuing armed militias and robbery gangs, especially after the Tunisian revolution.
