The Sudanese government called on the Human Rights Council in Geneva on Wednesday to classify the country’s Rapid Support Forces as a “terrorist militia”.

Sudan’s Justice Minister, Nasreddin Abdel Bari, confirmed in televised remarks that the request is based on interpretations of international laws.

In other statements a few days ago, the head of Sudan’s Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, stressed that if the conflict in the country does not end, there will be no political process.

Burhan pointed out that it is not possible to make a peace agreement with someone who does not abide, and every day has an opinion, referring to the Rapid Support Forces.

Sudan has been facing a severe humanitarian crisis since the outbreak of war in mid-April between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as “Hemedti”.

Earlier this month, Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN secretary-general, warned that the number of people facing acute food insecurity in Sudan had risen to about 18 million.
