The Sudan Medical Syndicate issued a statement on the worsening humanitarian crisis in the country as a result of the ongoing fighting between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, highlighting shocking figures related to displacement and casualties.
According to the statement, the number of internally displaced people exceeded 9 million, while more than 3 million people sought refuge in neighboring countries, making Sudan the largest displacement in the world.
The union said the fighting had killed more than 30,000 people and injured more than 70,000, citing the possibility that the real numbers were much higher, and made an urgent appeal to humanitarian organizations to intervene quickly to rescue thousands of trapped civilians.
The union also stressed the deteriorating humanitarian situation, with more than 25 million people, including 14 million children, in need of urgent assistance.
She pointed out that 15 million Sudanese lack access to health care because 80 percent of health facilities have stopped working and pointed out that about 19 million children are out of school because their schools have been turned into shelters or destroyed.
More than 53 health workers were killed, 21 hospitals were bombed, and 22 others forcibly evicted, the statement said.
Sudan’s economy has lost at least $120 billion, equivalent to a 12-year budget.
The union called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the opening of safe pathways for humanitarian aid, and support for reconstruction and development.
She called for a political dialogue involving Sudanese civilian forces to ensure that perpetrators of war crimes are held accountable and excluded from any future roles.
