Malik Agar, deputy chairman of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, directed the command of the Fourth Infantry Division in the city of Damazin, the capital of the southern Blue Nile region, to advance towards the city of Wad Madani, the capital of Gezira state, to become the first line of defense for the region.

The Sudanese official stressed that the military institution is coherent and must be preserved and said that it reflects the diversity that characterizes Sudan, stressing the need to protect it. This comes amid clashes since last Monday between the army and the Rapid Support Forces in Babanoussa, the largest city in West Darfur state, as these forces seek to take control of the city where the command of the Sudanese army’s 22nd Infantry Division is located.

The state of Gezira joined the war circle on December 15, with the Rapid Support Forces taking control of Wad Madani after battles with an army force that lasted about 4 days, after which the army announced the withdrawal of its forces. About 5.9 million people live in Gezira state, Sudan’s breadbasket, including about 700,000 people in Wad Madani.
