The Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM), which has been locked in a long conflict with the Sudanese government in the Darfur region, has declared a state of “severe famine” in areas under its control in Jebel Marra, West Darfur.
The movement pointed out that the number of displaced people in those areas has reached more than 2 million and 250 thousand people, most of them distributed in 13 shelter camps.
The movement explained in a statement that the humanitarian crisis has reached its most intense since the beginning of the conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces last April, and the situation has worsened significantly after international organizations evacuated their staff, stopped humanitarian aid, and slowed the movement of life in the region, which led to the failure of the planting season.
The statement stressed that the harsh conditions led to the displacement of millions of people internally and externally, with the deterioration of security and health conditions and the emergence of famine and epidemics.
The movement recorded a high number of deaths among children, the elderly and pregnant women due to malnutrition and lack of primary health care.
At the end of the statement, the movement appealed to the international community to provide support to the displaced, warning of “a real humanitarian catastrophe and a possible famine.”
The United Nations has warned of the possibility of famine in Sudan, where the country is suffering from deteriorating economic, security and health conditions.
